NMMSS Scholarship 2026–27: Last Date 31 October, ₹12,000 Yearly, Eligibility & Apply Online

The Ministry of Education has extended the last date for National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) applications for the academic year 2026–27 to 31 October 2026.

Under this central government scheme, eligible selected school students receive ₹12,000 per year. Fresh and renewal applications are submitted through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). Students should also ensure that their applications are verified within the revised schedule.

NMMSS 2026–27: Extended Last Date and Verification Schedule

The Ministry of Education announced the latest deadline extension on 1 October 2026. The revised dates are:

Activity Last Date
Student application submission31 October 2026
Defective application verification15 November 2026
Institute Nodal Officer (L1) verification15 November 2026
District/Nodal Officer (L2) verification30 November 2026

Important: These are National Scholarship Portal application and verification dates. The Class VIII scholarship selection examination is conducted separately by individual States and Union Territories. Its dates are not the same across India.

What Is the NMMSS Scholarship?

The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme supports academically capable students from economically weaker families and encourages them to continue their education after Class VIII.

The scheme provides one lakh fresh scholarships annually to eligible Class IX students selected through examinations conducted by State and Union Territory governments. Scholarship support may continue through Class XII through renewal, subject to the prescribed conditions.

NMMSS Eligibility Criteria

Students must meet the conditions specified under the scheme.

  • Family income: Annual parental income must not exceed ₹3.50 lakh.
  • School: Students must study in eligible State Government, Government-aided or local-body schools.
  • Class VII marks: At least 55% marks or an equivalent grade are required to appear for the selection examination.
  • SC/ST relaxation: Five percentage points of relaxation are allowed in the Class VII marks requirement.
  • Selection: Fresh scholarship recipients must qualify in the examination conducted by the relevant State or Union Territory.
  • Continuation: Renewal for Classes X–XII depends on the applicable academic performance and scheme requirements.

Meeting the income and marks criteria alone does not guarantee a scholarship. Fresh applicants must also satisfy the selection and other prescribed conditions.

Scholarship Amount and Payment

Selected beneficiaries receive ₹12,000 per year, equivalent to ₹1,000 per month when expressed as an annual average. This does not mean that the scholarship is necessarily paid every month.

The amount is transferred to eligible students' bank accounts through the government's Direct Benefit Transfer system, subject to successful application processing and verification.

Fresh Application vs Renewal Application

Fresh application: For eligible newly selected students applying for the Class IX scholarship after qualifying through their State or UT selection process.

Renewal application: For existing beneficiaries continuing into Classes X, XI or XII, subject to the scheme's renewal rules.

Remember: A fresh NSP application does not replace the State or UT scholarship selection examination. Students should follow the instructions issued by their respective education authorities.

How to Apply for NMMSS 2026–27 on NSP

  1. Visit the official National Scholarship Portal.
  2. Complete One-Time Registration (OTR), if not already completed.
  3. Log in using the required student credentials.
  4. Find the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme under the Department of School Education & Literacy.
  5. Select the appropriate fresh or renewal application, subject to eligibility.
  6. Enter the required personal, school, academic and bank details.
  7. Provide the documents and information requested by the portal.
  8. Review the details and submit the application before 31 October 2026.
  9. Save the acknowledgement and monitor the application status.

Students who have already submitted their applications should check whether any corrections or verification actions remain pending.

Application Verification: What Students Should Know

After submission, applications undergo verification through the relevant school/institute and district-level authorities.

Level 1 (L1): Institute Nodal Officer verification must be completed by 15 November 2026.

Level 2 (L2): District-level verification must be completed by 30 November 2026.

The NSP also displays 15 November 2026 as the deadline for defective application verification.

Students should regularly check their NSP application status and contact their school if verification is pending or corrections are requested.

Important Clarification for Students Across India

NMMSS is a central government scholarship scheme implemented through State and Union Territory selection processes.

Students should distinguish between two different activities:

  • State/UT selection examination: Used to identify eligible fresh scholarship recipients.
  • NSP scholarship application: Used by eligible selected students and renewal beneficiaries to apply for scholarship support.

The 31 October 2026 deadline in this article refers to the NSP application process, not a single nationwide selection examination registration deadline.

Final Advice

Eligible students should submit their fresh or renewal applications before the extended deadline and ensure that the required verification is completed on time.

Before applying, check the official National Scholarship Portal and the relevant State or Union Territory education authority's instructions.
